RYA PRESS RELEASE
12 April 2010

DOUBLE TRIUMPH FOR COVENTRY SAILING TALENT BRAYSHAW

Coventry sailor Hugh Brayshaw has double cause for celebration after claiming a first ever RYA Volvo Youth National Championships title and winning selection to represent Great Britain at the prestigious Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Turkey this summer.

Crew Brayshaw, 16, and his helm Mike Wood from Leicestershire, dominated proceedings in the 420 two-person dinghy class at the RYA Volvo Youth Nationals, staged at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy last week.

The in-form Midlands duo, who have been sailing the 420 together for two years, established their fleet lead on day one of the Championships and maintained their focus and momentum over the course of the four-day event to land the RYA Volvo Youth Nationals 420 title 10 points ahead of their nearest challengers.

In winning the RYA Volvo Youth National crown, Hollowell Sailing Club’s Brayshaw now has the honour of being part of the 12-strong RYA Volvo Team GBR squad that will do battle at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey from 8 – 17 July.

He also joins an elite band of sailors who have won RYA Youth National titles and represented Britain at the ISAF Youth Worlds, including three-time Olympic champion Ben Ainslie and all three of the famed Yngling ‘Blondes in a Boat’.

Ben Oakley, Chairman of RYA Youth Selectors, said: “We saw the competitors race in all conditions at the Youth Nationals, in most cases pushed really hard by their peers, which helped show us how they will cope with the demands of the Youth Worlds regatta and allowed the best sailors to emerge at the top of the fleets.”

Skandia Team GBR star and two-time OIympic champion Sarah Webb, who was one of the selectors at Weymouth and Portland, added: “Having watched the racing all week the team look strong in all conditions I think we have a strong team across the board and hopefully we’ll come back from Istanbul with some medals.”

As well as the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF Worlds to look forward to this summer, Wood and Brayshaw are also set to compete at the 420 class World Championships in Israel and the 420 Junior Europeans in the South of France, also in July.

Once again RYA Volvo Team GBR will be supported by Musto in Turkey and in build up to the event the sailors will all undertake a comprehensive training and international competition programme around their academic commitments to ensure they are best prepared for the event..

BROMSGROVE’S BECKY IS WEST MIDLANDS RYA ONBOARD VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

A young Bromsgrove sailing instructor is celebrating after receiving a top award from boating’s national governing body – the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) - for her commitment to introducing young people in the West Midlands to sailing.

Becky Thomas, 19, was named the 2009 West Midlands RYA OnBoard Volunteer of the Year at the regional RYA OnBoard Awards held at Upton Warren Outdoor Education Centre on Monday (22 February).

Becky developed her sailing through the Worcestershire Schools’ Sailing and Canoeing Association (WSSCA), based at Upton Warren OEC, starting as a beginner before going on to represent WSSA at many events nationwide.

After becoming a qualified RYA Instructor she quickly put her experience and know-how to good use holding training for WSSCA while over the past year she has given up her evenings and weekends to run Upton Warren’s Junior Gybers sailing club, which takes talented WSSCA sailors and provides them with more advance coaching.

OnBoard is the RYA’s nationwide grassroots initiative to introduce more young people to sailing and windsurfing and encourage them to stay in the sport.

There are currently four OnBoard clubs in Birmingham and Worcestershire hosting sessions for local schools, community organisations and youth groups to try the sport for the first time and then provide the opportunities for the youngsters to continue participating.

Between April and August last year, more than 1,500 children enjoyed their first experience of sailing and windsurfing through OnBoard in the West Midlands, while no fewer than 3,700 have been introduced to the sport since the programme began in the region with almost 550 of those children now participating regularly.

Tom Davenport, OnBoard Development Officer for Birmingham and Worcestershire, said: “Volunteers provide the foundation to the OnBoard programme and if it wasn’t for their time, dedication and commitment fewer youngsters would be able to get out on the water for the first time and experience what sailing and windsurfing can offer.

“Our OnBoard clubs have all been running taster sessions for local schools and youth clubs that feed into regular clubs that run on Tuesday or Friday evenings or a Saturday morning. Some 38 schools and seven youth clubs since April last year have been able to take advantage of these sessions and we are always looking to encourage more and more schools and clubs to get involved.”

Supported by TEAMORIGIN, Britain’s Challenge for the America’s Cup, OnBoard is working to introduce half a million children into sailing and windsurfing over 10 years and since the programme began in 2005 more than 10,000 youngsters have become regular participants whether enjoying the sport as a relaxed leisure activity or a high performance sport. There are now 177 OnBoard clubs nationwide.

BIRMINGHAM OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTRE IS WEST MIDLANDS RYA ONBOARD CLUB OF THE YEAR

Birmingham Outdoor Education Centre (BOEC) is celebrating after receiving a top award from boating’s national governing body – the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) - for its commitment to introducing young people in the West Midlands to sailing and windsurfing.

The centre was named the 2009 West Midlands RYA OnBoard Club of the Year at the regional RYA OnBoard Awards held at Upton Warren Outdoor Education Centre, Bromsgrove on Monday (22 February).

With the support of Bartley Sailing Club and through the work of project leader Howard Eeles and his team of instructors, BOEC has led the way in providing young people in Birmingham with the opportunity to sail regularly at a heavily reduced cost.

In two years their K20 club has accrued a membership of more than 50 youngsters, many of whom come from inner city Birmingham, with a waiting list of young people eager to join. The quality of the operation was highlighted in September when six of the club’s youngsters competed at the prestigious RYA Volvo West Zone Championships, regarded as the first step on the Olympic sailing ladder.

OnBoard is the RYA’s nationwide grassroots initiative to introduce more young people to sailing and windsurfing and encourage them to stay in the sport. BLITHFIELD SAILOR WINS REGIONAL YOUNG SAILOR OF THE YEAR

RYA PRESS RELEASE

ANOTHER AWARD FOR ANDY AS STONE WORLD CHAMP IS HONOURED BY REGION

Stone sailing World Champion Andy Bridgman added another award to his increasingly crammed trophy cabinet yesterday (Thursday 4 February) as he received a special honour from the RYA West Midlands in recognition for being named a 2009 RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year.

Having received his RYA West Midlands Regional Young Sailor of the Year accolade from Skandia Team GBR star and three-time Olympic champion sailor Ben Ainslie at the London International Boat Show last month, Andy returned to the more familiar surrounds of Blithfield Sailing Club in Abbots Bromley where RYA West Midlands Regional Chairman Bob Holmes presented him with a special trophy from the region.

The 15-year-old Alleyne's High School pupil shot to prominence last summer as he was crowned Topper class World Champion in Austria. The Topper junior class is the boat in which Beijing 2008 Laser champion Paul Goodison started his career.

Bob Holmes said: “We felt very strongly that Andy’s achievements should also be recognised by the RYA West Midlands region and we’re delighted to present him with this award. Andy has a tremendous focus and is a great young role model for young sailors throughout the West Midlands who want to do well in their racing.”

Andy, who started sailing after his dad Stephen took he and his older sister Amy to Blithfield to try out the sport, added: “I want to try to take this as far as I can. I just love sailing and there’s no better feeling than when you’re halfway through a race and you know you are sailing well and doing everything you can to win.

“I’m very grateful to the RYA West Midlands for this award and want to say a special thank you to my parents who are my biggest supporters and take me all over the country every weekend for training and competition. I’m also very grateful to Andy Felthouse and everyone at Blithfield for helping me.”

As a member of the RYA’s National Junior Squad programme, Andy has access to the RYA’s highly-subsidized World Class National Training Programme designed to help Britain’s top young sailors achieve future international success. He has also received support from Solihull-based Merry Marine, the Stone Festival, Stafford Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council.

In April, Andy will compete at the Laser 4.7 World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand before sitting his GCSE exams this summer.

RYA CHILD PROTECTION POLICY - OPERATING PROCEDURES

There have been one or two enquiries recently from RTC Principals who are uncertain what they need to do with regards to checks and references for those working with children.

The following is an extract from the 2010 Guidance notes and these state:

"A guidance booklet complete with templates on how to write your own policy and procedures is now available; making the job as easy as possible for you. This can be downloaded from the RYA website or please call 0845 345 0400.

A Child Protection Policy should be in place at all RYA Training Centres dealing with under 18s"

It is the responsibility of the Principal to obtain references for key instructors working with children

These references do not need to be CRB checked and Principals should follow the guidance in the RYA Child Protection booklet as to what is appropriate.

PACING BETWEEN POWERBOATS BANNED BY HQ

At the West Midlands Regional Instructor Conference Paul Mara (Chief Powerboat Trainer for the RYA) stated that the RYA have recently been made aware of a number of boating accidents where Instructors have been carrying out pacing between powerboats on Level 2 Powerboat Courses, as a post course addition. Not only are these not within the syllabus but are not part of any Powerboat courses within the RYA Powerboat Scheme. All instructors are reminded that the only pacing allowed to be taught as part of the syllabus is between a single powerboat and a dinghy as part of the Safety Boat Course Syllabus.

Carrying out pacing between powerboats at Training Centres is prohibited. For more details on this please contact Paul Mara at RYA HQ.

FAO ALL CLUBS - PLEASE DISPLAY THE FOLLOWING ON YOUR NOTICEBOARDS AND SECTION 2 ON ALL OF YOUR POWERBOATS

1. Top Tips for Powerboat Drivers

- Check Oil before starting the engine, and cooling jet after starting
- On safety boats with tiller steering, kill cords should be clipped to the buoyancy aid of the driver
- Always clip the kill-cord around something strong (e.g. your leg) and back onto itself - never rely on the spring clip gripping onto fabric
- Never put the kill cord around the wrist. It may slip off or you may take it off
- On establishing contact with someone in the water, the engine should always be turned off.

REMEMBER - the primary reason for wearing the kill cord is to stop the boat hitting you or someone else after the driver has fallen out.

2. Safety Boat Drivers

- Wear the kill cord securely
- Stop the engine when in contact with someone in the water
- Always beware of the propeller
- Look before you start the engine

REMEMBER - the kill cord is to stop the boat hitting you or someone else after the driver has fallen out.
