The Principal of a Training Centre takes the ultimate responsibility for the operation of the centre. As such they are clearly of great importance to the RYA and to the region.

This area of the website is to support Principals in their role of running our Training Centres. We hope that it is useful to you. The Regional Development Officer – Gareth Brookes is willing to travel to your club to meet with any Principals and/or Chief Instructors to discuss your Training Centre and your role and how he can support you in it. If you require any further information please email gareth.brookes@rya.org.uk

Every year a Principals meeting is held at the Regional Instructors Conference. This is an opportunity for you to meet other Principals and to share ideas and problems. The 2008 Principals meeting was very successful with over 15 Training Centres represented.

The following issues were discussed -

Getting the most out your RDO

Potential SI’s gaining experience at commercial centres

Changes to the requirement for an SI to be on site

2008 inspections

How to maintain the personal skills of your Instructors

Running an Instructor Course at your own Training Centre

Regional Instructor Courses

Make sure your Training Centre is represented at the next meeting!

Worried about your next RYA Inspection? Then check out the Inspections Page.

The RYA’s National Sailing Scheme can be run by Training Centres in the UK and overseas, using dinghies, multihulls or small keelboats.

Full details of our requirements for running these courses can be found in the documents below. A brief summary is as follows:

- The Principal or nominated Chief Instructor must be an RYA Senior Instructor with the multihull or keelboat endorsement if appropriate.

- Your training boat(s) must be suitable for the type of courses you intend to run and you must have shorebased facilities including a teaching room, changing rooms, toilets and showers.

- An application for recognition must be sent to the RYA detailing who your instructor(s) will be, where you will run courses from and on which boats.

- An inspection visit will be arranged in order to check your boat(s) suitability and maintenance, the shorebased facilities, and your centre’s administration and operating procedures.

When our Inspector is happy that your centre complies with RYA requirements, a report will be submitted to recommend that recognition should be granted. Recognition is then granted by the RYA, at which time you will receive confirmation through the post and may start running and promoting our courses.
